Dialogue

1

Jingjing: Am I calling at a good time, Mark? I hope you're not too busy.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: Now's a fine time to talk, Jingjing. Anything new?

Jingjing: Well, I keep getting asked, by a small number of my contacts, if I can recommend English books about pandemics like the one we're having now. I thought I'd relay that question to you.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: Hmm. You caught me between books at the moment. That's a good topic to be reading about, though.

Jingjing: What would you recommend, off the top of your head?

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: Two books come to mind, one I've read three times, another everybody knows.

Jingjing: Tell me about the one you read three times.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: It's called The Stand, and was written by Stephen King. The story begins with a man escaping a lab where they created a super-flu. In the weeks that follow, almost everyone in the world dies, leaving only a very few people who are immune.

Jingjing: That sounds surreal.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: It is. Stephen King is a horror fiction writer. The best thing about the story is how each of the main characters feels all alone in the world, with people dying everywhere around him or her.

Jingjing: Hmm. I don't know if I'd want that to be the best thing about a book I devote lots of time to reading. Tell me about the other one, that everybody knows.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: OK. That one's The Plague, by Albert Camus.

Jingjing: I know that book. Isn't it about a small town in France that has an outbreak.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: Yeah, and they close off the town so that people in surrounding areas are fine.

Jingjing: I remember reading bits of that for a university course I took. We read other excerpts from Camus. He's a brilliant writer.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: That he is. I wasn't especially interested in plagues when I picked up his book. Let me get a few other titles for you. Can I call you back in a few minutes?

Jingjing: Sure. Talk to you then.

Jingjing

caught me between books:

I don't have a book I'm reading currently (also, someone could say, I'm caught between jobs at the moment. or, I hope I catch him between girlfriends.)

off the top of your head:

about knowledge you're ready to share, without doing any more research or checking what you've read in the past

come to mind:

about something I remember or think is important once I know the topic

surreal:

about something that couldn't happen in real life, or wouldn't happen that way—more like a dream

excerpt:

a carefully-selected small part of a book, article or published speech

Dialogue

2

Jingjing: Hey, Mark. You called sooner than I expected.

jingjing

Mark

Mark: Yeah, it was a quick search.

Jingjing: That's funny. In the whole time since our last talk, I've been listening to a radio broadcast, of an interview with three best-selling authors of books about epidemics.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: Sounds interesting. Wanna bounce those names off of me?

Jingjing: Let me grab my notes. Here: Geraldine Brooks, author of Years of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague; Lawrence Wright, who wrote The End of October about a disease much like Coronavirus and published his book on April 28th this year; and Tom Perrotta, with a book called The Leftovers, about the aftermath of an event that kills off 2% of all humans.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: Those all sound pretty current. I guess they'd have to be, for a radio interview that took place less than a month ago.

Jingjing: Last week.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: Last week, yeah. Well, before I hit you with my list, let me ask you some questions about those three books.

Jingjing: Sure. Shoot.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: OK. So, they're all novels, I'm assuming. Which one is most closely based on fact?

Jingjing: That's a tough one. Years of Wonder is a historical adaptation, though the main character who tells the story is mostly made up. The End of October is based on lots of research, also, because the author talked with dozens of public health experts before writing.

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: Cool. And I like the premise of The Leftovers. I'll add those three books to my reading list.

Jingjing: What were you going to recommend?

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: Just some classics: Love in the Time of Cholera, and—oops, here's one of the ones you said, on my list already. The only others I have are non-fiction.

Jingjing: I like that better! What are the titles?

Jingjing

Mark

Mark: The Great Influenza, by John M Barry; also, The Ghost Map, by Steven Johnson.

Jingjing: Well, it sounds like we both have a lot of reading to do. Catch you later, Mark.

Jingjing

bounce those names off of me:

bounce off

The Stand

(La Peste)
